Can anybody point me in the direction of an hydraulic oil MSDS that will be sufficient for me to conduct a RA.

We are repairing units that come to us full of the stuff therefore I do not have a supplier I can go and ask for the MSDS.

I have googled 'hydraulic oil MSDS' and there are a few but I want to make sure the one I use covers the oil we are dealing with.

Why are you not asking the supplier of the oil?

Just read the initial post properly - apologies.

You could ask the customers to supply the MSDS - some repair agents won't accept / progress equipment unless it is provided, just to reinforce the message.

A one-size-fits-all approach might not be acceptable, although the generic RA could take oil generally into account but would require individual assessment on the actual oils provided as and when they are seen.

Contacted you directly with MSDS.

Try also to contact the suppliers of your oil directly. They will have a copy of the correct MSDS.

We run a warehouse for our customer, our customer has 100's of engineers across the country that will use various types of hydraulic oil in the power packs that are sent in to us from locations nationwide, we dont repair the power packs they are sent away then come back to us. The problems we are having is that when the packs are sent to us from wherever they are usually full of oil which tends to spill out over our warehouse.

I have contacted our customer (whose operation we run) highlighting our concerns to no avail. I cannot unfortunately make them empty the power packs before they get to us bar telling them we wont deal with full power packs and hence putting the contract at risk!

You can maybe now understand why I cannot go to the supplier of the oil, getting every engineer to get a data sheet for every type of oil they use nationwide will also be laughed out!

Have you considered standardising the oil to be used?

My company is an amalgamation of two previous competitors, who had similar types of equipment but used various oils. A decision was taken, based on technical assessment, to standardise the oil to be used. Simplified purchasing, improved price (due to volume), made recycling simpler and obviously only required one MSDS whcih could be quoted and referenced with confidence.

Standardising the oil type may not be possible. Different oils give different performances under different pressures and temperatures.

As an engineer that spent 25 years working with hydraulic oil I think that you are right to be concerned. We can all see why you need the specific details of each oil. If we look at OM15 for example it is an irritant. Others such as skydrol are far more and you cannot have a one fits all COSHH sheet.

Whilst there are many different oils out there, the figure is in the tens, not hundreds so yes it will be a pain to initially collate the info. As for not filling the units with oil, that just upsets engineers like me. I sometimes found that I couldn't use serviced components because internal seals had dried up and perished due to a lack of internal oil.

Try going at it from a Quality approach. The two oils above are not compatible yet they are both used on aircraft and do the same job. Over the years I have spent many a late shift replacing contaminated components because some plonker failed to identify the correct oil. Remind those concerned that cross contamination with the incorrect oil could cause a lot of damage to seals etc and maintenance costs/liability costs could increase.

A threat to their profit margin may just set a hare running and get you your answer.

Best of luck.
