Being a relative newcomer into H&S I've had this query from a colleague and wondering what other persons thoughts would be:

"We have a variety of boxes (approx 600x600x600mm size, with typically 4 lifting handles- they are 6U flightcases if that means anything to you!), which weigh around 40-50kg. We are currently redesigning them, and one of the replacements weighs 70kg. They need to be manually moved around on ships, rigs (and submarines!), and we're trying to find a sensible target weight.
So ideally, we could do with an 'feel' for what is a safe carry for 2-3 people on the flat and on stairs..."

My own thoughts are that the weight should be reduced, but the containers are for nautical electronical equipment and I reckon that each box would be containing equipment that needs to be kept together.
So any comments would be appreciated.

Hi there.

I too had a problem with the weight of flight cases. Ours weigh 35kg's. We redesigned them to have swivel castor's so that they can be manovoure easily.

If these are to go into ships and submarines then the bulkhead will be a problem. Any way to break the equipment down smaller?

Hi Dan,

I've queried the guy about whether the equipment can be split into smaller packages and still awaiting a reply. I would guess that they would prefer to keep the equipment together so that they don't run the risk of losing any of the enclosed parts. But at the moment, that would be my suggestion.
The swivel wheels sounds like an idea, but moving these around on rigs and boats/subs with wheels could be interesting!

Allan,
As an ex submariner a couple of thoughts for you. These boxes are going to go down vertical hatches with ladders fitted. The size of the box may be a problem, you need to find out if they will fit or if you need to arrange for ladders to be temporarily removed. If the box will fit down the hatch then you need to be very sure that the handle on the end can take the full weight as it will be lowered into the boat on a rope. As for moving it around in side the boat, I'd leave it to the crew, they know the boat intimately, where slinging points are etc and will undoubtedly get the boxes to their destination in the same time it takes a non submariner to climb down the main access or engine room ladder and turn round. Many are the times I have found a bewildered "civvy" at the foot of a ladder saying "But I followed it straight down, where is it?"
Also, make sure the kit is very secure in its box, submariners will not treat a big, heavy, awkward box with any respect, even if you tell them to be careful.
If you do get on a submarine remember, it is a BOAT not a sub, and if they offer you "babies heads" at lunch time they are talking about a steak and kidney pudding!
