Posted By Martin Taylor I know that specific training and qualifications are required for installing, balancing and dressing abrasive wheels but my question is what training and qualifications are required for installing grinding discs in hand held equipment grinder Stihl saws etc.
thanks

Posted By RP The only nationally accepted competence for this type of work falls within NVQ's, and then only inferred as part of it. There does not exist isolated qualifications for these singular operations. HSE would suggest that the old Regulations are a useful guide on this. within the ACOP (PUWER) it use abrasive wheels as an example.
Regardless of the competence requirement for inspection, selection and fitting of these wheels or discs the safe operation must also be covered with appropriate training for actually using them.
Hope this helps...

Posted By jayjay Hi Martin !
This equipment would be covered by PUWER 98, so therefore the operator would need to know how to use it, the maintenance and types of wheels i.e stone, metal etc. Wheel and machine speeds, mounting of wheels etc. Contact an accredited training organisation and they will give you the content on training. Hope that helps ?
Cheers JJ

Posted By Martin Taylor thanks jayjay - I'm showing my ignorance I know but for simple hand held grinder are there different types of disc that can be fitted or do they tend to work with a simple multifunction type? What about speed change on hand held - are these common?

Posted By Dave Daniel There are no special requirements for grinding wheels. The Abrasive Wheels Regulations 1970 were repealed years ago by PUWER along with all the special training and recording requirements.
In truth, the regs were intended for regulation of traditional grinding wheels, not abrasive disks or angle grinders.
The issue of correct mounting of angle grinder disks is very different to fitting a traditional grinding wheel and requires different skills, but no more than any other machinery use.
