Ladies and Gents, I am re-writing our Manual Handling Course AGAIN!! to try and change things and of course keep it interesting. I am due for my CIEH Professional Trainer appraisal AGAIN in the next couple of months, and seeing that I am an occasional trainer and I am delivering three courses in October I have a suspicion they may turn up then........

Anyway.... I have the legislation, anatomy, mechanics, ergonomics, injuries etc all sewn up, you know the usual stuff... but!!

Practical?... I have used empty boxes of all shapes and sizes in the past... but this time I want to make it sexy.. exciting... so has anyone got any ideas how I could introduce some sort of game into my training plan without losing the importance of learning to lift and carry correctly.... maybe some examples from your own experience..

Here's hoping
Regards

Hi Steve

Google for templates based on either weakest link, who wants to be a millionaire, bingo etc. You will find them free (mainly American sites). From this you can then develop games etc.

I have used these in the past, and whilst they take some time and thought on your part regarding the answers for may be correct and totally incorrect, the feedback I have received has always been positive. Obviously these like anything have a limited life, in that you can only use the idea a few times before it becomes boring.

Usually the winner gets a small prize - bar of chocolate, or a free breakfast voucher etc.

I can't think of anything specific which will be fun - it is H&S training after all! However when I last arranged manual handling training I incorporated a section on car seats and got the trainees to bring their cars and we set their car seats up correctly.

I know, not manual handling but to do with the back and they really felt like they learnt something. Just broke the session up a bit.

I have used Game Show Pro in the past it is a good fun way of getting competition going and doing a Q&A recap. I also use company gizzits as prizes.

Thanks everybody, as always some good information coming my way, which I will use, especially the game show approach...

for the practical side of things the manikin sounds a good idea (clean dressed) of course.

Try this for an exercise. Turn a small four legged table upside down and tell your participants to assume that it is a pig (dead or alive - your choice). Get your participants to break up into groups and ask them to risk assess the process of moving it from one place to another. The assessments should cover most aspects of good MHO techniques, issues such as no handles, awkward load etc and it includes the topic of team lifting. Then get them to talk through their assessments or if you are courageous enough get them to move 'pig' across the room.

Easy - commandeer two damn good looking but manually handling trained volunteers, one male and one female, required to demonstrate the boring manual handling techniques that you are describing to the course attendees.

All sections of your audience should then hold their attention span throughout practical demonstrations - even better if you have audience participation in two person lifts !

You could always try wearing stockings and suspenders and a short skirt to do manual handling demonstrations. Is that sexy enough for you.

Some office workers wear skirts for work. You try asking them to put their feet shoulder width apart, bend down keeping back straight, get a firm grip before they attempt to lift.

Forgot to mention they must assess the load before they attempt to lift.

You could also mention that if they damage their back there is only one thing they can do and that is to lie on it.

I only know of one profession where you can earn money lying on your back.

I could go on but thats enough smut for one day.

Usually raises a few smiles.

Some trainers can make a day out of manual handling training which amazes me. No wonder trainees fall asleep.

Knees bent, back straight ra ra ra!

Saw a great video once showing little kids dressed up in work clothes lifting boxes toys etc. Thing is they did it correctly, seems that we are born with good MH practices that we lose as we get older.. well it stuck we me anyway

Nothing to do with Manual Handling but you could stir some amusement and interest mixing up the words in the presentation in this fashion:
I cdnuolt blveiee taht I cluod aulaclty uesdnatnrd waht I was rdgnieg.
The phaonmneal pweor of the hmuan mnid aoccdrnig to rscheearch at
Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a

Thanks again guys, Stuart C the videos you are talking about are called "Child's Play" there are two of them one industrial and the other is called "child's play in the office" yes they are very good I have them both.

I don't think the stocking and short skirt is a good idea I have lousy legs and am not shaving them for a training course.....

regards again

If you want sexy manual handling then pay a visit to your local fitness club. Ask one of the ladies if she would like to demonstrate how to lift a man over her head with one hand. (I've had it done to me)

With a competent manual handling trainer by her side this could make for a fun class.

I loved Chas's animal/table idea - unfortunately the following day there was a ban on the movement of livestock.
Otherwise could expand on the idea by using a ballasted inflatable sheep.

Merv/Gilly very good, thanks. Merv do you have her contact details? purely professional reasons you will understand..... It is just that I have been training Manual Handling for 15 years on and off and I tend to change it from time to time but I am running out of ideas to make it fun and memorable... and before all the puritans out there say Health and Safety isn't fun "stop taking yourselves too seriously" it can be what you make it as long as you get the message over and reduce workplace accidents and ill health.

again everybody thanks for your input I have a few more ideas now... and some for my manual handling course as well...

Steve

In the past I have had people move buckets of water (a good way to branch into slips, stips & falls and good housekeeping) and fire extinguishers. Tried a bucket of nuts once but did'nt move around as well as I thought it might.

Steve,

nothing to do with MH, more to do with the "H&S is fun" detractors.

Good H&S gives pleasure. And can/should be fun to do.

I'm not with the American "rah ! rah ! rah ! wear-a-red-nose-and-a-funny-hat" approach but I do like to see people smile, laugh or even giggle when I offer advice.

I don't tell jokes (maybe against myself sometimes), nor offer recipes, but the odd anecdote (collected from real life over the years) can raise a smile and get them into a good enough mood to listen to the hard core stuff.

works for me. Why not try it ?
