Unfortunately in my home city as in most large cities there are instances of "glassing" in the pubs and clubs resulting in serious injuries. Locally there is now a call for plastic glasses, is this a step to far, it’s not the glass that is the problem but the individual who uses it as a weapon. What is the position regarding glasses in your city centre pubs, your thoughts as fellow safety professionals will be welcomed.

These instances are dealt with under the Licensed Premises Risk Assessments - These are actually required under the Licensing Act not H&S legislation as they cover a wider range of issues including vandalism, littering and crimes of violence etc. There is however significant overlap in details.

Plastic containers are one of the recognised alternatives to glass - unless you want a pint in in a cardboard pot! It is also one of the reasons why they pour bottle contents into containers and do not hand out bottles in some premises.
