My company are trying to get their act together with Overhead travelling crane/FLT operator training. We have got the basic training about right but are still struggling with the familiarisation training side as there does not seem to be much guidance on the subject. We have decided to implement a system of log books. After an employee has received basic training by an external training provider we plan to issue each trainee with a log book to allow them to log lifting operations under supervision of an experienced operator who will sign off the lifting operation to confirm the operation was carried out satisfactorily. Only when the experienced operator is satisfied will he sign it off. Following completion of the log book the trainee's manager will sign the log book thus authorising the trainee to carry out lifting operations without supervision. Does anyone have any comments they can make to this approach and if so can you suggest what is best practice on the length of time/hours/lifts an employee should complete supervised prior to being authorised to go it alone.

Just a point: Will the lifting operations be signed off by degree of difficulty. e.g Will the trainee not be allowed to load racking at 30m height until he is proficient at 20m heights and so on

No Steve. We do not have any racks at any higher than three bays. Our intention is to sign off as competent when a trainee has completed a series of lifts under supervision. We are just not sure how far to take it. My initial thoughts were 20 supervised lifts but I was wondering if anyone else has addressed this issue and how they went about it.
