Hi everyone,
I am just wondering what your views are on the effectivness of training.
I was recently on a course ( in my view a very important course) and prior to the test, we were all given the answers, also one person had no english, ( test was in english)Person with no english passed! AMAZING.
When It comes to training,Looks like money is used to buy qualifications.
Ok the person who gave the course was not a member of IOSH yet!! ( but may be in time)
Is it normal in the UK for the trainers to give the answers like this. My feeling is that is not the way it should be done,
I myself am a trainer, and would never dream of doing such a thing. Perhaps some trainers are not aware of their own legal obligations.
I do feel happy though when people pass after being on my course, and am a little disappointed when some fail ( rare occasion but it does happen)
I am intrested in other peoples views.

Saemus - I would NEVER give answers out before a test/examination - I would maybe hint during the course that the following topic of discussion would be relevant to take particular note of.
Like yourself - I receive the satisfaction in knowing that I have "made the difference" in someones understanding.
I am disappointed to learn what you have reported.

I would never condone giving the delegates the answers, however I do feel it depends on the course being run and the objectives of the session.
I work for the training division of a large consultancy and as such provide courses from a couple of hours up to NEBOSH. I see know problem with working with the delegates to establish answers on say a simple quiz on a 2 hour general awareness session, but would never never do the same with, for example, the exam on an IOSH Managing Safely course. I have heard of companies that have done this!
Regards, P.

I think we agree on what this is about. Someone's remuneration or continuing employ depends on the pass rate.
The people we tend to work for don't go for questionnaires. But they do require participant evaluations of the utiity of the training. Low score and you get paid but not asked back.
But. We are currently negotiating for a contract to train/qualify hundreds of people. Our brief is basically ; "everyone must pass"
In all good conscience you musn't cheat. You have to teach.

Note to self: Always read through what you post. I know it should read I no and not I know! Now I am confused.

I think we sort of crossed in the post. I was doing mine (12.09) while you were doing yours (12.03)
No, you can't give out the questionnaire before-hand but there will always be "bullet points" (americanism. sorry) which you really need to blast into their brains.
I've sometimes thought that a pneumatic nail gun or even the traditional coal hammer would make a great teaching aid.
Some days are better than others
