Hi All,
I have just started work as a Warehouse Manager at a vehicle body building company.
We operate a warehouse in which we stock lengths of various steel, aluminum extrusions and wood sheets.
Currently the warehouse is non heated, and today is very cold!!
I have mentioned this to the senior management and they have mentioned that as the warehouse is non insulated that a heater cannot be added, at the moment, but this is something being looked into.
Does anyone have any guidance on any health, safety, welfare issues I could raise to help speed up this process. (As it very very cold in here!!)
Or what is the recommended temperature for working? - This is not a cold food chilled warehouse, but today it could quite easily be...

Do employees work for extended periods in the open warehouse or are they located in an office, only going into the warehouse to check stock, etc?

We had the same problem in our warehouse. We looked at the hours worked etc by the operatives and came up with an 'enclosure' around the computer (booking stores in & out) and heated this for when they stood still for extended periods. We also issued thermal underwear to all who worked in there. The main problem was the size of the warehouse and the pattern of work undertaken.
Try reminding the senior managers of their responsibilities to the staff who work in there.

Hi,
Staff work in the warehouse from 7am till 5pm continuously as a section of the warehouse has been sectioned off as a machine shop and we have the following equipment:
1x Cross Saw
1x Table Wood Saw
1x Guillotine
2x Pedestal Drill
1x Folder
1x Band saw
I have two staff, plus myself in a temporary office, with only a little fan heater (which the staff supplied, and the company PAT Tested)to keep my tootsies warm.

If the machine shop has a roof, it can be heated while leaving the rest of the warehouse at ambient temperature.

Hi,
The warehouse is all open plan, with the machine shop having 3/4 height walls from the ceiling to segregate it, if we are going to heat it, we need to heat the entire warehouse, approx 6,000 sq ft.

Hi,
In our old un-insulated factory we use gas powered radiant heaters mounted at roof height. These heat only the area underneath them and as they do not heat the air directly are quite efficient, especially if it's draughty. Biggest problem we have is getting them high enough, as they can be too warm!
Ours are from Ambirad, but there are probably others on the market.
