howdo all
this may seem like an obvious question, but, as lead has its own regulations, am i supposed to prepare a coshh assessment for it? common sense would tell me yes as it has an OEL

any opinions would be gratefully received.

Yes, it has its own regulations - "Control of Lead at Work Regulation 2002"(CLAW)

Reg 5 requires an assessment of the risk to health created by working with lead. Not technically a COSHH assessment but the same thing in effect.

COSHH Reg 5(1) disapplies COSHH Regs 6 - 13 in those situations where the Lead Regs 2002 apply. As Steve says, you need to carry out a risk assessment but it will be under the Lead Regs, not COSHH.

Hi Phillip

You could have a situation when you need to do two assessments!

Suppose you are repainting a bridge over a road

The old paint on the bridge may contain lead. Any exposure subject to Lead Regs.

But lead in exhaust of any older vehicles using the road is excluded from application of Lead Regs. Still hazardous so subject to COSHH.

Effectively cumulative exposure [albeit the effects are somewhat different] but this liable to be missed if separate assessments made.

Regards, Peter
