Vroom Vroom-Advice On Fencing Standards For Stock Car Racing

Posted By Aidan Toner All you Clarkson devotees can advise on this one. We are a small local authority who have had an oval race track on a long term commercial lease to a local operator for many years. Circit barrier (for cars)is a low level concrete barrier with a tensioned cable inset on top of concrete barrier. The system seems to work ok with a tensioned cable catching and returning 'errant' cars to track.Cabling and cable support stanchions have been replaced on an ongoing basis over the years. This car barrier is assisted by a higher level 'debris catch barrier' some 2 metres behind the car barrier. Both barriers are getting on in years and I suspect the 'debris' barrier needs replacement. Any advice on available or pertinent standards (for either barrier)is welcome. It seems there are not a lot of standards out there??

Posted By John Hamilton I can't advise directly, but there are two organisations that may be worth contacting; the general governing body for motorsport in the UK is the Motor Sport Association (formerly know as the RAC MSA) www.msauk.org or, more specifically, the British Stock Car Association www.brisca.com. Each will have a technical department that can provide expert advice. Best of luck, John

Posted By Stupendous Man Aidan,
John has provided the two most suitable contacts. The MSA should be your first port of call as they are the governing body - their 'blue book' gives all the sporting and technical regulations for drivers, vehicles, equipment and venues.
BrISCA, as the organising association may have additional standards.

Posted By John Hamilton Got a moment tonight to grab a quick glance at my Blue Book. Section D contains some relevant guidance, although the somewhat vague nature should sound familiar to H&S professionals...
"The course must not present any unreasonable hazards to competitors and spectators."
"At race circuits all enclosures should be protected by a substantial barrier designed to be capable of stopping a car" (!)
The Blue Book costs £23.00 from the MSA.
Cheers, John

Yes indeed-technical detail is a bit lacking to say the least.
Thanks again
