Looking to improve the knowledge and understanding of H&S law and practices of our Supervisors as this will hopefully help improve the culture within the site and set the tone. As ther workforces immediate point of contact and most visual member of management time i feel it is important to improve their awareness and sense of responsiblity towards H&S, which is already at a decent level but needs continous improvemet as we all do. Can anyone recommend a good course that we could send these guys on for the level they need? We have to balance the time required away from work so as not to interupt production badly but want something worthwhile at the same time.

Any advice appreciated.

Gav

Hi Gavin,
you could check out the IOSH "Managing Safely" course. It last approx. 5 days but these can be staggered over a number of weeks. We have put dozens of first line managers / supervisors through this course and the feedback is generally positive.

Details of courses and providers are listed on the IOSH website.

Hi Gavin

Where are you based, I know of a couple of organisations that do H&S for Supervisors and Managers, which are about 1 day. Very broad brush looking at responsibilities and interpretation of the legislation.

Hi Emma,

I'm based in Belfast, so that might be outside your area?

Cheers, Gavin

Hi Gavin,
Have you had a look at the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) 3 day Intermediate Certificate in Supervising Health & Safety course?

http://www.cieh.org/voca...ng_health_and_safety.htm

We are going to run one for our night shift next week as it seems to address most of our requirements.
Training providers are detailed on the CIEH website as well.

Hope this helps.

Good luck!
Regards
Andy

Both the Managing Safely and the CIEH route is good so you need to decide which suits your organisation. We have gone down the IOSH route which works for us. Out of the initial set trained one person showed interest and has progressed to NEBOSH cert (with credit!) and is currently studying the NEBOSH Dip.
Print off both schedules of work and compare what each course offers and you will be able to decide which course best fits your organisation and the supervisors as IOSH used to contain a work base project as well as an exam. Your supervisors may not be 'up' for this where as a course which is over when classroom based work is complete may suit them.
Good Luck

Hi there,
doesn't IOSH run "supervising" course, along the lines of the managing safely course?

IOSH has a syllabus available for Supervising Safely. A look at the Course provider list on the web site will show who runs this course

Hi, Have you thought about developing and delivering your own in house course? We have developed one.. allows us to integrating training on in house systems, paperwork etc. We feel that to "throw" supervisor level managers onto the IOSH course with no prior knowledge or H&S training is to much. Be happy to send you a copy of ours (1 day) for you to look at and maybe use as a basis for developing your own.

Cheers.
