Question -
When someone wishes to return to work after a long illness their doctor stops issuing them with a sick note and they return to work.
If we are unsure that they are unfit to undertake their normal duties and we have no light duties available what are the alternatives?

It may or may not be appropriate to your workplace - but "normal duties part-time"?

Do they need any training? Could be the ideal time to arrange a course! Or, depending on the individual, give them all the risk assessments and safe systems of work for their department, and ask them to check them for accuracy.

At my previous employment we got a driver back to work before she was fit to drive - she totally re-designed all the Despatch department's paperwork to make it more "driver friendly" without losing any of the information we wanted to capture.

When we have an employee returning to work from an absence on the sick we ask for a doctors note to sign them off the sick and fit for work. I then hold a return to work interview with them on a standard for we have produced which will ask the employee the relevant questions which can lead into a risk assessment of them if it is required.
