Posted By Pete48 May I ask some knowledgeable person to help me avoid some lengthy research. I need some advice on building codes, standards etc for spiral staircases. I have an external spiral staircase, central pillar, concrete construction (1960-1970 era?.) It is external to the main building but is totally enclosed by an independent glass screen. The width of the stairway is only adequate for one person and as with all spiral staircases, the inner edge of the steps are very narrow. Due to the independent construction of the glass screen, there is a gap of approx 5 inches (125mm)between the outer edge of the step and the glass/supports. There are no handrails. My common sense tells me this is not the staircase to use as the main access to the first and second floors where up to 40 people may be at work. Also I am pretty certain that although it may have been constructed as such, it is probably no longer acceptable as means of escape. I would appreciate any help to save me doing the searches to find the codes etc. Opinions from those with experience in this area also appreciated. May be going into discussions with landlords soon.
Many thanks in anticipation

Posted By Konstanty Budkiewicz British Standard 5395 Part 2 1984 - Code of Practice for the design of helical and spiral stairs may be a starting point for your query. Table 2 refers to sizing of stairs.
