Hi all,

We use a large skip (40ft long) on site for cardboard. We are looking for ways to improve the loading of it. I recall seeing a picture somewhere on the web of a platform that sat next to a skip which allowed access to waist level of the skip. A bit like what's used at our local council tip. Would anyone have any links to images of these on the web (so I can show them to people here), or know of a manufacturer?

Reference access steps/platforms is there no other way you could load this container? Can you change or alter the container so that it can be loaded from ground level.

Gantries and access platforms are in use in the waste industry for access to containers - however in my experiance are being designed out in favour of split level civic amenity sites, feed chutes from inside buildings, "post box" openings on the sides of continers to name a few options - i.e. negating the need for steps/platforms for access to deposit waste. Steps can increase trips/falls - especially when negotiating them with arm fulls of cardboard and you can't see your feet!

Instead of using a Rolonoff open top bin and spending money on ramps and platforms, talk to your waste carrier who should be able to help you with different types of bins for cardboard (REL, FEL, High sided skips etc).
Alternatively ask for advise on hiring a compaction unit that you can either buy or hire. This will ensure all cardboard is put into the bin from ground level. You will also get up to three times as much in the bin thus reducing turnarounds on the bin and reducing transport movements.

You can get mini-bins / cages fitted with catches and bars that allow forward tipping or doors/floors open underneath when held above skips. The problem Ive experienced in the past is that as you encourage access upwards with steps, the employee believes it gives them the right to access inwards (the skips).


Also, it is common practice to see people inside skips, jumping up and down to try and compress the waste materisl or drivers doing this to allow neeting before taking offsite; controls and risk assessment is needed to prevent this.
