I was hoping that someone could help and point me in the right direction.

I have read that under REACH, safety data sheets will remain in the same format. The article stated that the section of CHIP dealing with SDS was being implemented in REACH. I now find that there will be changes to the format of SDS.

Could anyone please point me to the requirement in REACH that covers SDS, I cannot find it. Perhaps I am missing something.

Thanks

David

The basic information in the safety data sheet will remain the same, although the order and numbering of the sections will change.

However, in addition to the safety data sheet the manufacturer will be required to provide what is termed an "Exposure Scenario" with details of the hazards that will arise out of the use of the chemical for a specific purpose and the "Risk Management Measures" that he recommends. As I understand it (and there is much about REACH that is simply unimplementable as it is written at the moment and will certainly need changing) the Exposure Scenario may be an extension of the safety data sheet or supplied as a separate document.

There is much more to this that can be put in a posting on this forum. For example what happens if you do not wish to reveal the purpose for which the chemical is being purchased or if the use is one that the supplier has not notified Helsinki about, etc.

The Chemical Hazard Communication Society are running some good courses on this.
