Simple one is passenger carrying and non-passenger carrying have a different inspection regime.

There is one for starters.

Naomi,

You could start by looking at the this HSE publication and the references made within it.

http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg290.pdf

Let me know if this is not exactly what your looking for and I will endeavour to help further.

How about asking them whats a lifting accessory and what is classed as lifting equipment? shackles, slings, eyebolts and so on are lifting accessories and chain blocks, pull lifts, tirfors and cranes are classed as lifting equipment.

Another good one would be what is shock loading and in what way may it affect a effect lifting equipment if this occurs? Shock loading is when a load bounces about when attached to a crane usually, it can usually cause strain of up to 5 times the weight of the load to impact on the lifting equipment and accessories, which is why wire slings have the factor of safety/safety coefficient of 5:1 and nylon slings are 7:1.

Also a good one is what should be added to the weight of the load when selecting the correct equipment. The answer would be the weight of the lifting accessories and equipment.

And this is quite a good one i think, whats the first question you should ask yourself when planning a lift? Is the lift necessary is always the first thing that should be asked as lifting operations are hazardous and should be avoided if possible.

Hope this helps.
