Having carried out a fire risk assessment for a small shoe shop, we have decided to locate 2 water & a CO2 extinguisher in the stock room which leads from the shop to the rear fire exit. They are close at hand (literally open the door behind the counter and there they are). Our risk assessment has indicated there is more likelihood of a fire in the stock room than in the shop and furthermore any extinguisher in the shop would be prone to vandalism / theft. Our extinguisher supplier has now advised that we must place them in the shop. I can find no such stipulation in the FRO. Any advise would be appreciated.

Hi Joe,
I haven't seen your risk assessment but would agree with your reasons for siting them away from the public, and in the stock room. I would question why 2 water extinguishers? - as you only need one, if that doesn't put the fire out the fire is too big!
Just make sure they are on wall brackets and close to the final exit from the premises, and remember that if the stock room is on fire you need to escape through the front door without attempting to use the extinguishers.

Thanks Crim - the reason for 2 water extinguishers is that this is the minimum stated in the shops & offices FRO guidance. I'm still unsure if one has to be actually in the shop, rather than behind the scenes.

Just wondered why the CO2?
Also what is the make up of your stock?
You may wish to consider this and review the type of extinguishers you have?
Are the extinguishers located on your escape route?
Just suggestions on what you may wish to also consider

Yoa are correct about the guide. In that case I would have to chance positioning a water ext. near the main entrance, no point having both together and one exit without?

I just looked at the guide again and page 58 first para states "the provision of one water based extinguisher for approx every 200m2 of floor space, with a minimum of two extinguishers per floor".
This could be interpreted as 2 of any type per floor, therefore your one water and one CO2 would be ample?
Either way I still recommend only using one extinguisher on a fire, after that I'd get out.
