Posted By Mart Look at things like ; means of escape and rescue. Use of harnesses and winches. PPE, Hygiene facilities. Toxic gas or oxygen deficiency. You'll need to develop a specific confined spaces plan including a permit to work system.

Posted By GaryN You will also need to consider... The location of the manhole - is it in the highway? is traffic management needed? Is it on a factory/industrial site? This may introduce hazards such as industrial waste being introduced upstream. How deep is the manhole? Are there step irons present? Are they in good condition? Are there any machines etc in there (for example screens) What is the potential for being washed downstream - Depth of water & flow rate and pipe size? What hazards are you going to introduce? Any tools etc. Communication between the surface & in the manhole

Posted By garyh Don't forget the need for physical barriers (not tape!) around the manhole if possible before it is lifted.
