I have recently gained NEBOSH general cert and being made redundant from my previous employment and would serious like to start a career in health and safety professionally, just wondering if any body had any serious advice on getting started. I currently have 2-3 years experience in health and safety, conducting risk assessments, manual handling assessments, method statements are just among a few of the things i have undertaken. Any advice or job offers would greatly received

Sounds like you're off to a good start already!

I entered the industry a little over a year ago, and have now worked on two top tier COMAH sites and find myself in the position of Safety Advisor on a large chemical plant (Scary really how quick it happened)

Anyway my advice - (after good CV etc)

1 - chase a career in safety with all your heart! if it's really what you want you'll get there and people will see how keen you are too.

2 - be patient it took me a long time to get my first job (I spent a year working in a sweet shop with no job offers :( ) you just have to keep on plugging

3 - Take any opportunities you can, they all open doors. Work experience, IOSH events etc

4 - Don't be scared to exploit contacts. if you know people in H&S from your last role phone them up!

5 - use the forums! I posted on the careers forums just over a year ago and here i am!

Work hard and good luck,

You have already made a good start and knowing little about you I would advise the following:

1. consider your age and what you would ultimately like to achieve.

2. what are you prepared to invest into your career (eg time, effort and money).

3. what career path you intend to develop.

For example, to gain a meaningful position in h&s you need both experience and qualifications. You can only gain experience by doing. Therefore consider what qualification you would like next. A NEBOSH diploma is the norm, expensive but necessary. Alternatively you may wish to consider a BSc or MSc, otherwise you may consider these for the future. You may find an employer who is willing to invest in you.

Health and safety has developed into a number of specialist areas. If you have a knowledge of a particular industry then you might consider choosing that particular route. What are your strengths and weaknesses? Are you a hands-on person, or perhaps you have good writing skills. Either way, you have the opportunity to develop your skills to your advantage.

Plenty of things to think about. Good luck in your quest.

Regards

Ray

Thanks for the responses from Adam and Ray you both seem to know you are talking about and it sounds like you had a hard time of it as well before getting your first role in health and safety. Considering my age as Ray said, I'm only 23 and any role in health and safety would accepted no matter what it was i would even consider unpaid work at the moment.
I am enthusiastic about H&S and would like to take my career as far as my abilities would allow.
I do want to progress onto the diploma as Raymond said it is expensive and very difficult fund by my self.
Anyway enough waffling from me.

Thanks for the advice lads.

Darren,

Well done you, don't just rest on your laurels push until you get what you want.

I have just put an offer out to someone in your position.

I also recently offered someone in a similar position work experience, with the opportunity of a permanent position once they had gone through a development program and shadowed one of my officers, unfortunately they chose to back out after I had given them some of my time.

I believe in binging motivated people through. If they are serious, which I am sure you are.

I am sure there are many more people the same as me so keep at it.

I am taking a risk on an individual at the moment who has no experience but think they have a good attitude & motivation, they will have three months on the job training, before getting released on inspection duties after a learning process and assessment.

If you contact me off the thread I may be able to offer you some work experience, but unfortunately I am fully staffed up from January, depends on what area you are in though obviously, let me know where you are I have good network of friends nationally that I may be able to put you in touch with.

I am all for giving people a chance and opening doors, so over to you. Whatever you do do not give up. Also if you get in with the right people you should not have to self fund your development.

Again as well as internal development I am putting officers through NEBOSH Construction and then NVQ level4 when they reach the appropriate level, as well as other specific courses.

As some one eluded to you need to get yourself a CV together, and put it out through the right people, At your age though what you need is a start somewhere or at least as you say work experience, to get some under pinning knowledge

Good Luck

Dave
