I think it was an image associated with the phrase 'competent to the core'

If not, I am sure someone will correct me!

Fornhelper,
Jane is right the apples on the CPD and IPD literature relate to the campaign that launched the 'new' Chartered Membership structure in 2005. This campaign was 'Competent to the Core' to show that safety and health practitioners develop and maintain competent performance through the development of their knowledge, skills and experience and could demonstrate this by recording it and recognised this development as a 'core' requirement.
I used to use the slogan and apples at the end of presentation's I did, to keep the audience in suspense about what it meant. I think this may be more a reflection on the sadness of the presenter than the audience! Similarly a number of branches benefited from free Granny Smiths on occasions.
Of course having core competence means that you can get the 'plum' jobs.
