Good morning all,
Would anyone know if there are any minimum illumination standards for the lighting of external walkways/paths/car parks. Suitable and sufficient springs to mind, but am curious if there is anything more prescriptive?
Best regards
Paul

HSG38 recommends an average of 20 lux for movement of people in non-hazardous areas.

HSG38 gets it's figures from "Code for Lighting" by the Chartered Institution of Building Service engineers (CIBSE).
This book is well worth getting and gives guidance for all kinds of lighting requirements internal and external.
For general external areas it does advise, as per previous post, average levels of 20lux and a minimum of 5 lux.
The section on external areas is well worth reading as it gives good guidance on external areas that should be considered in your assessment. For example, if the area is a working or hazardous area, the lighting might need to increase to 50-100 lux, and if it is / near a loading area 150 lux may be required.
Well worth a read!!
