Posted By P Workman How many WCs / urinals are required for construction sites? 'Adequate' facilities is not enough for my boss, he wants numbers. If memory serves me correctly, old welfare regs stipulated 1 per 25. Has this number changed / is this number different for construction (i.e. 1 per 40?)

Posted By Steven John Bateson As you no doubt know, the Construction (H,S&W) Regs 1996, reg 22(3) requires provision of 'suitable and sufficient' but doesn't specify minimum numbers. What you may not know is that where this is the case and specifics are provided in other legislation, courts may use that other legislation as a guide to what may be considered to meet the suitable and sufficient requirement of the applicable legislation. In this case, the Workplace (H,S&W) regs 1992, Schedule 1, part 2 specifies at least 1 WC for every 25 males (rounded up, so you require 2 toilets for 26) and 1 for every 25 females. In addition, HSE guidance says that construction companies should consider increasing the number if porta loos are used instead of flushing toilets. Regards,

Posted By Dave Wilson Welfare Regs 1996 are now repealed look in the new CDM regs and it says Welfare facilities Regulations 9 (l)(b), 13(7) and 22(l)(c) Sanitary conveniences 1 Suitable and sufficient sanitary conveniences shall be provided or made available at readily accessible places. So far as is reasonably practicable, rooms containing sanitary conveniences shall be adequately ventilated and lit. 2 So far as is reasonably practicable, sanitary conveniences and the rooms containing them shall be kept in a clean and orderly condition. 3 Separate rooms containing sanitary conveniences shall be provided for men and women, except where and so far as each convenience is in a separate room, the door of which is capable of being secured from the inside. Gives no indication of how many!

Posted By Dave Wilson Look in schedule 2 of the CDM ACoP and it will tell you what you require, there is also a useful document (as an annex) on the link above which explains the difference between welfare 96 and the new CDM requirements

Posted By Steven John Bateson I stand corrected, CDM 2007 did indeed revoke CHSWR96. However, my comment regarding use of the specifics in WHSWR stll stand (given that CDM2007 still requires 'suitable & sufficient' without specifying a minimum. Thanks for the update, Regards, Steve

Posted By Crim At least 2. Consider male - female as there is usually a female member of the design team, however I have never seen a lady use a construction site toilet? (I wonder why?) Risk assessment then dictates more if required. Thunder boxes are OK but the additional welfare facilities required i.e. hot (warm) running water and a decent size basin for washing arms and elbows are not provided in thunder boxes thererfore the portable cabin type are best. If the boss needs to know numbers try one loo for every 20 workers, but always a second one to consider the female.
