I was a bit put out by the following comment from one of our HR managers I would be interested in hearing what others think

The requirement for starters and leavers medicals,(questionnaires and examinations where appropriate) is old hat and is not relevant to non manufacturing companies

I always encourage my clients to investigate their new starters medical & employment history for two reasons: to enable any necessary changes to be made to the job etc and to establish( and if necessary quantify) any pre-existing conditions so that allegations of work related harm may be treated accordingly. This would not necessarily be a medical examination but could be a questionnaire incorporating a statement that this is a true response.

Another current post talks about drivers medicals.

A leavers medical is in practice extremely difficult to quantify.

I agree that leavers medicals are not always easy to carry out in practice. However I agree with the last poster that new starters medicals are essential to ensure a person is fit for the job without any alterations and also (sadly in these litigation-conscious days) to protect against future claims.

As for suggesting it only applies in manufacturing - has your HR person never heard of RSI or stress?

Agree with Heather.

The nature of the symptoms being looked for may differ in an office setting, but a knowledge of any pre-existing conditions is always beneficial from an OHS perspective.
