I am surprised that there is not a thread relating to the fire on the thistle alpha platform the other day. From what I can gather this had the potential to be more serious than what it was.

From peoples own experience of the offshore and related industries, is industry as a whole better off in a safety sense, than 20 years ago when the piper alpha exploded? Or is it just that platforms and other industry have better systems in place which are able to prevent an incident escalating.

Hi William,

I am not surprised of a slow response as there was not a disastrous out come of this incident.

There will always be the potential for any incident to be more serious than a particular outcome.

Until the accident investigation and the final report into this incident is published we can only speculate as to whether or not existing control measures, systems, etc are adequate and aided the safe evacuation of so may persons

Hi William,

The recent Thistle Alpha fire joines the ever increacing portfolio of incidents that litter the in tray of Lord Cullen House ( The HSE Offshore Headquarters Aberdeen).

Yesterday(28/11/2007), Anne Begge M.P. for Aberdeen South, Tabled a Question at the P.M.'s Question time, part of the question was with regard to the recent Inspections conducted by the H&S Executive Abourd Offshore Installations within the U.k. Sector.

The H&S Executive have found a persentage of these Installations below there expectations.

When pressed by Anne Begge M.P. to name these Installations the H&S Executive refused.

If as the H&S Executive has exposed, below expectations...is it not only right and proper to inform the Persons on Board as to the Integrity and the reliability of these Installations...and for them to make a judgement whethere or not to board these time bombs ?.

I have worked in the Offshore Industry since the mid-70's...I have lost many freinds to 'incidents', had a few hairy moments too.
The bottom line is many of theses Installations are held togeather by rust and God's good grace.

Regards, Garry...
