A housing association has asked us to remove a ceiling joist and replaster the area that has been removed. Nothing wrong with that. But, the tenant is bed ridden and they insist that they stay in the room and in the bed. Yes this is for real.

No this is for real. I have had some many problems from these idiots. This is the final straw. And my line manager doesn't even back me on these things.

Just move the bed and work at the side of the person - Job done:-)

Alternatively ask your manager for some sky hooks to hold the tent up and support the work platform:-)

Finally ask the housing assciation to sign that they will accept full liability for any injury or ill health effect noted as arising during and within 12 months following the work.

Some Thursday thoughts anyway:-)

Why do they want to move the joist? It's not as if the occupant is going to bang their head on it.

you could always ask the person to hold the plaster bucket for you!!!!
only joking,I would refuse the job and tell them to get someone else to do it cause if you drop anything on him and injure him be sure the Health and safety exec will lay you to blame regardless of anyone signing a waver.
I wonder how you would write a Risk assessment for that one?

Aghhh. The joys of working in social housing..... A good few years ago I was patch plastering after an electrical rewire of a house. Holes and chases everywhere. I needed to patch around a ceiling rose in a bedroom. The tenant said that his partner was still in bed but he insisted that I did the work. So there I was standing on the bed handboard and trowel in hand carrying out the work with the woman totally unaware. Of course I had my mate as a witness in case allegations were made. Safety? I never give it a thought.
Of course I should have asked the boss for a risk assessment. I am sure that his kecks would have rolled up at the thought of putting his name on the end of it.
