Hi

When I made the decision that I wanted to move across from production management to become more involved with H&S I looked at the ENTO
http://www.ento.co.uk/standards/summary.php
Standards to see what I would be expected to have knowledge of, using this information allowed me to ensure that I followed the best route
NEBOSH Gen Cert to start with, I then used this as the basic qualification that potential employers were asking for, once the feet were under the H&S Officers desk, I then began to build up personal skills required this was due to pressure of the job which as we all know increases with each passing year .

As I progressed I upgraded my IOSH membership as required this was to show others, that as other professionals in all areas do I was increasing my value to others, as we all know potential employers are not allowed to advertise for persons with X amount of years experience anymore, so they are using the qualifications and level of membership to organisations as they are aware that correct routes to qualifications can take time and during this period experience is gained.

I am sure that I am not the only one out there that has worked hard and at own expense to try to make oneself valuable to their current employer and any potential future employer.

Regards

Mick M

I've glanced at the first few contributions and come to the conclusion that H&S people obviously have a lot of time on their hands - wouldn't you all be better getting on with your jobs?

I have been interested in some of the replies particularly those aimed at my comments regarding "couldn't be bothered". Why is it that you seem to think that I had time on my hands/no family ties etc? I think most people have found it difficult to find the time to study but those who have passed the exams have made that extra effort. At no time have I said that those who haven't got the full qualification for CMIOSH are any some sort of underclass but if you want to be fully qualified just get on with it and stop carping! I've never liked excuses and if some people never want to take the final exams - fine - but don't expect to get the same level of job as someone who has put in the extra hours. Why should you be able to circumvent the natural progression when other people have put in the trouble?

Some people are now saying that having CMIOSH is elitist - codswallop, that's just the politics of envy. There is nothing wrong with being proud of your own achievements! I only use my post nominals on here if I speak on behalf of my specialist group. Other than that they're for weddings, funerals and barmitzvahs.

I would choose my words very carefully before you respond

I never at any point termed you as being elitist, did I??

Nor am I envious of anyone who has achieved CMIOSH.

I know what I am capable of! and in some cases probably a lot more than some who care to call themselves CMIOSH.

I like others who are NOT CMIOSH are not carping, just merely stating an opinion, after all it is a public discussion forum.

I am in fact getting on with it, getting my Diploma part 2, I know where I am going with my career, and what I want, unlike some!

To be honest, given the responses to this post and others, if this is the standard of members that IOSH want, then I would be embarrassed to call myself CMIOSH (if and when I eventually achieve).

And to quote my earlier post

"you wonder why we are getting laughed at"
