Posted By Ron Hunter As I read this article, "Health and Safety Reasons" translates as "Couldn't be bothered". How convenient to have a bogey-man to hang this on.

Posted By Pete48 This looks suspiciously like a resource issue. Why isn't the paper running a campaign to make it happen? How about asking parents to come to the aid? There must be parents who are CRB checked to the standard who could assist the school for this short term venture and other parents or locally based H&S people who could assist them with risk assessments (it is simple process specified in school procedures and I doubt that it neeeds to be done from scratch every single time they leave school).
Isn't it amazing that parents and the local paper can be so negatively passive about such a matter.
The rules are about safeguarding children of which general H&S is just one. Do all these parents and the paper really want to see their children going on unplanned and improperly supervised excursions? Yes until one gets hurt and then watch.....

Posted By DRB Talk to other parents, govenors etc and express your displeasure. You could also volunteer to provide them with assistance in completing a generic assessments for all the visits.
This type of reaction needs to be addressed. If the school are allowed to get away with this what's next? No swimming lessons at the local pool because of the risks associated with getting them there?
Re: the criminal checks as I understand it if a teacher attends as well there shouldn't be a problem.
Alternatively get together as parents and arrange the visits yourselves. Get plenty of publicity and shame the head into admitting she got it wrong.
