Posted By Bob Youel Its worth a lot more than the NEBOSH cert [it's more valued etc] and it has a lot more content therein Depending on your age, position etc its a good way to go as £ for £ environmentalists get paid more, are significantly better thought of and are not the continual butt of jokes/bad press etc

Posted By DavidW Hmm! Interesting question ,but not really sure you can compare them. The IEMA Associate Mambership course is aimed at those who have little or no formal training in Environmental issues (very often, in my experience H&S peopel who have been given environmental responsibilities as well, while the NEBOSH Gen Cert is aimed at those wishing to start a career in H&S. So it depends really on which route you plan to take, Environment or H&S. The area of environmental management is certainly a growing market and likely to continue to be so for some time to come but the IEMA course is just the first of many steps. Good luck whichever way you go.

Posted By Stephen R. Brown Thank you David I have been in touch with my college lecturers today and discussed the very same thing. I do want to progress on the Health & Safety route however I think I will need a good basic understanding of the requirements of issues like Environment management systems and so on and from what I can see the IEMA Associate Certificate demonstrates this very well indeed and the added bonus of this course being delivered over 10 weeks, which in my case will start in March 2008. Thus giving me a short break prior to enrolment on my Nebosh Diploma as you may have guessed I am new to Health & Safety I worked with the Navy for quite a long time since then I have worked in my present place of employment for the last four years. So I just want to get my professional qualifications sorted out. I passed the Nebosh General with a credit and I am due to sit my Fire Safety & Risk Management on the 19/12/07 so it has been a very full year for me, however very rewarding indeed once again thank you for your input regards Stephen

Posted By PeterL Hi Stephen, I completed the Nottingham and Trent University Diploma in Safety Health and Environmental Management at Carlett Park on the Wirral as a franchised course. It is divided into six modules with 3000 word assignments x 2 each month, exams on each module subject and a final project (work based) of 10000 words plus and all count toward your final result. Once completed as said you automatically qualify for IEMA, but have to complete a two year skills development portfolio and peer review to become CMIOSH. Hope this helps. Cheers Pete,

Posted By Les Welling Hi all. I obtained the British Safety Councils Diploma in Enviromental Management in 2000 and was given associate membership of IEMA so you may wish to go down that route.

Posted By PeterL Hi WTaylor Cut and paste from IEMA Website see below: If I obtain a NEBOSH Specialist Diploma in Environmental Management will this qualification be accepted as an acceptable route for associate membership? The NEBOSH Specialist Diploma is currently undergoing the approval process, and is not accepted as a route to Associate Membership at the moment. When the NEBOSH course has been approved, it will be included on the course provider list under the Training section on the web site. Q22 refers to the Nebosh Specialist Diploma and states that once the diploma is approved it will be placed on the course provider list.Does this imply that if you hold the Spec Dip and it was taken through an approved provider, you will be eligible for associate membership? These details cannot be confirmed until NEBOSH have gained approval from the IEMA. When NEBOSH are approved, these details will appear on the IEMA website. Hope this helps Cheer Pete,

Posted By Louisa Redpath Hi Stephen, I gained my Associate level qualification via the Applied Learning route (NVQ style) with Corporate Risk Systems. It worked well for me as I had the hands on evidence, and the nvq flexible approached worked, but it might not for you, each to their own. Regards Louisa
