Hi, do we have to have our extinguishers serviced every 12 months ?..or is this another one of those cash cows for certain suppliers. I would like to know if anyone has moved across to a different time schedule for their extinguishers.

cheers

Kevin,

Unless the rules have altered recently extinguishers should be checked/inspected every 12 months, and then follow the manufacturer's instructions. (Note manufacturer and not supplier).

They should also be fully serviced after every use and at regular intervals guided by manufacturer.

Stick to this and you will not go far wrong.

Kevin,

According to BS5306-3:2003 extinguishers should have a basic service every year with extended service and/or recharging every five to ten years dependant on type.

This will be the standard that the service company will work to. If you purchase a copy it will tell you exactly what should be done.

If you have a fire and your insurer's find out your fire precautions don't follow the British Standard I expect they will find some devastating small print in their policy

good day people, be very aware that extinguishers not serviced at least every twelve months come under the 'NOT MAINTAINED' catagory under BS 5306pt3. This then means that the extinguisher has to be discharge test and recharged to be able to be serviced and put back into service. This is a expensive way to maintain extinguishers as most have a 5 year life before discharge testing is required, Co2 are ten years. It is also true that most iinsurance companies in there terms of insurance state every twelve months. I run my own fire extinguisher company and have come across a couple of threads on this site i have liked to answer. If you require some free advice on extinguishers mail me at extdoctor@hotmail.co.uk.
