We've just had a thread on H & S bikers, but what other 'interesting' hobbies do we have?

I'm a hillwalker, mountain marathon competitor, fell runner, cyclist, road runner.

I'm aiming to try microlights, paragliding and kayaking sometime.

Im a QHSSE Advisor for an international oil company, however i have recently just booked a 'skydiving' holiday where i fly out to california do 36 skydives over a 2 week period and gain all necessary qualifications to become a professional skydiver ( i have done a few jumps int he past and want to take it up as a hobby)

I also do other sports such as bungee jumping, white water rafting, and flying (an airplane)

I have also done other activities such as abseiling - parascending - paragliding - waterskying - jetski-ing etc but none that i ahve done enough to class as a hobby.

I hate the image that if you work in the QHSSE occupation you are boring and obsessed with safety. I do more dangerous activities than the majority of people who think this.

But o well . . hums off singing 9 to 5. . . .

In the past used to SCUBA dive and rock climb. Have also been known to drive around the odd race track as fast as I can - admitidly due to my ability that's not actually that fast and always in someone else car (How may people in H&S can afford their own Ferrari?) none of which I consider inappropriate as done with careful planning and adequate safe guards, but now due to expanding waist line and family responsibilities take part in the most inappropriate hobby of all ...GOLF!

Risk assessment - not aversion.

I ski, scuba dive, played rugby & cricket (PPE always, always worn), ride horses, bungee jumped and once said NO to my wife.........

I will keep the inappropiate hobbies to myself, however, I used to keep around 50 colonies of honey bees (until my boy reacted badly to a sting).

I am now back into motocross and enduro riding. (not the best hobby for the self employed)

Aye, aye Haggis. Fit like?

Does ceilidh dancing count? I usually end up with numerous bruises the day after a good ceilidh not to mention multiple sore muscles.

Then there's the running, only I'm laid up with the achilles injury again at the moment. See - exercise *is* dangerous!

Recently been on kite boarding day, getting the kit for Xmas.

Going snowboarding at new year. Trying to get on snow kiting trip.

frequent wrestling in the front room with 7 year old son re-enacting WWE!

None of which are inappropriate!!!

I'm approaching my 6th decade and still do white water kayaking and rafting.

Anybody live near Holmepierrepoint or Bala?

Jim. If you're Midlands-based, might be able to easily get you some kayaking.

Yes, I'll see you tonight for some more of those hazardous activities - cracker pulling and vision-obscuring party hat wearing.

I know someone in Stonehaven who goes sea kayaking a lot.

Used to do Karate got my black belt and worked on the night club doors for years. I had to get very good at dynamic risk assessments. Perhaps that where it all started!

These days found on the golf course hacking away in the rough. Lots of golf balls on the Christmas list.

Caving for me, but not now because I'd never get through the squeezes, also riding - I had my own horse for many years. Sadly the most hazardous things I do now are making cakes and knitting (come on, it's well known that knitting needles are very dangerous.

I'm another ex Doorman that has taken to golf - some kind of trend!!

Used to drive the service vehicle and service a rally car - believe me - for most teams it's nothing like the big plush temporary garages you see the top teams working in on the TV.

I have been known to go out without my clipboard, elbow patches or beard. Now that's really scary!!
Allegedly, I have to wear an anorak for my inappropriate hobbies so I guess they don't really count.

Likewise have done / still do:

fell running, mountain marathons, mountain biking, triathlons, motorbiking, rock climbing, kayaking, parachuting, skiing.

Looking to do some paragliding next year and maybe some adventure racing or maybe an Ironman. Was due to the Marathon de Sables but having a few knee problems so had to pull out.

Would do every possible outdoor sport (except caving or bungy jumping) but money and time hold me back.

Still, not 40 yet so loads of time to fit it all in!!

So...........is it true Toecap, about your parents marital status and also your optical disability.

I'm a woodwork fanatic, and (I confess that) I never have the guard fixed to my table saw.

Not stupid enough to say no to the wife however.

I'm a birdwatcher... Not very hazardous that.

however, I'm also a fell-runner (when the Plantar Fasciitis clears up), a cyclist (just cycled to Prague) and in July we plan to do some Via Ferata stuff in the Dolomites.

Also plan to learn to scuba dive (done a couple of tourist dives) and have tried para-gliding.

Specialise in off the beaten track type tourism when funds permit,

John

Fishing.... can also be dangerous. Like when I fell down the cliffs at Dunbar, and shattered my knee.... Or when the engine on my mates boats caught fire - five miles out. Scary enough at the time.

I have enjoyed kiteboarding - but my knees won't take very much (see cliff fall above) and enjoy kite buggying when I can get the time / space.

Seems like the safety profession isn't as uniformly dull as some have portrayed us?

In my younger days

Shooting (22's, 303's, 7.62, GPMG - air cadets)
Rockclimbing
Absailing (played human conkers from bridges)
Death slides
Parachuting
Survival weekends (space blanket, map, compass, survival knife and clothes stood up in, dropped off on a Friday evening and had to be at a certain point by set time Sunday afternoon, having completed various tasks at various checkpoints).

Now - in most dangerous order first

Keeping the wife happy (never, ever said NO or been negative when out clothes shopping)
Motorbikes
Cars
Fishing (carbon fibre, electricity and water do not mix very well)
Golf (the way I play, extremely dangerous for others)

I SCUBA dive, play rugby, weight train, like a bit of hill-walking, have tried paragliding, white water rafting and love skiing.

I love taking part in these activities, and so many of the H&S people I know do too!

I re-enact Viking and Saxon battles, using longbow (shooting at people, though the arrows are rubber-tipped and only deliver a fist-sized bruise for two weeks); steel sword; and spear (depending on the situation :-)

Just sold the chain-mail though - it got a bit much running around in an extra 2 stone lol.

And motor racing - have driven F1, F3, F Ford, and been passenger in F1 2-seater (wow! so violent!).

I think it adds to our credibility when we can tell people that we do more than pub quizzes!

Well I'm just recovering from a shattered and dislocated ankle and broken leg following a fall from height off the horse! I compete nationally and internationally at horse trials.

A friend did suggest I should keep budgies instead but with bird flu I don't think that is any safer!

In my misspent youth:
Shooting (22's, 5.56, GPMG via air cadets)
abseiling

More recently:

Cycling (especially given the state of the roads and some drivers...)
Bushcraft, strange but wouldn't call inappropriate
Airsoft / Milsim - military re-enactment using replica rifles that fire 6mm plastic bb's and of course liberal use of pyrotechnics (thunderflashes, BB grenades and Claymore simulators). Great fun.

Taking pics of myself doing headstands in famous or inappropriate locations ;)
(Inappropriate used to include stupidly dangerous but I'm approaching 30 now and am far too old for that sort of thing :) )

Capoeira

Making fireworks

Cycling (to and from work scores higher in a rick matrix than montain biking!)

Working on a top tier COMAH site (Not really a hobby but inappropriate :) )

This list goes on but I've got a career to think about - who knows who might be reading :)
