Under LOLER,the wire rope and the hoist(including the hook) of a tower crane is considered lifting equipment-and so part of the crane itself,or is considered lifting accessory, and therefore a thorough examination has to be completed every 6 month?
We had this discussion on a SMSTS course.
Thank you.

I would be inclined to think that if it is taking the weight of the load then it would be deemed as part of the lifting equipment.

This is only my feeling I am sure someone will have an legislative answer for you.

cheers

The hook and hoist ropes are part of the crane and therefore included in the 12 monthly thorough examination. Unless of course the crane is used for man riding duties when it will be subject to a 6 monthly thorough examination.

The crane and all its parts are lifting equipment to the hook.
Chains etc are accessories.
If the crane is required to lift personnel then it must have a 6 month examination otherwise 1 yearly.
accessories are subject to a 6 month examination.
