Thanks to all who responded to my question posted on saturday, dec, 8th,I also believe that the rope, hoist and hook are part of the crane, but is there anyone who can help me find the regulation who says that?
Thank you again.

This is a very good question I have been looking for the Information for you for the past hour.
As far as I can determine BS7121 PART 2 Inspection Testing and Examination of cranes puts the Hoist rope as part of the Lifting Attachment like the hook and pulleys, not an Accessory like slings and chains, therefore part of the crane.
That is my view after much reading of the document. Also this is the way we in my last 3 crane companies have treated it. As usual I stand to be corrected but I will still treat it as such.

Hope this help.

Ta Alex

Statutory instruiment 1998 No 2307 (LOLER)

Reg 2(1)
"accessory for lifting" means work equipment for attaching loads to machinery for lifting.

"lifting equipment" means work equipment for lifting or lowering loads and includes it's attachments used for anchoring, fixing or supporting it.

My interpretation of accessory is "anything that is below the hook" - backed up by our insurer's surveyor.

See BS 7121-2:2003 section 13.1.4.3 Items to check at the specified period thorough examination.

I would also have a word with the site Appointed Person who should be able to give you an "on the spot" response and confirmation.

I agree with Colin Reeves - his extracts from the regs are quite specific and result in the summary he has put forward i.e. everything up to the hook is equipment and everything subsequently attached is accessories.

Surely a point of consideration must be the risk of a single component failure - hook fails load drops, rope fails load drops etc

As the other posters have asserted the hook and wire are part of the crane and are subject to the thorough examination scheme in place. Whether that scheme is time based or condition based is another matter for the crane owners and their insurers to decide.
Do they always fit the same hook after moving the crane from site to site..........hmmmmmm maybe that's another question worth asking the Appointed Person on site

You are right Eddie some cranes have more than one hook block. we would check these with the rest of the lifting accessories 6 monthly.
They should be on the Section J and have serial numbers for identification.

Good one

Alex
