trying to gather some opinions here as to which is the better publication and which one would be more suitable to utylise as the companies operations and procedures manaual.
bearing in mind all the construction site managers have been on the SMSTS course and there are concerns that there may be some differances between the 2 publications which may cause confusion at site level.

thanks in advance

Both serve different needs.

In my view, the CIP blue book is more detailed and perhaps includes more content compared to the CITB GE 700.

None should replace the "arrangements" for health and safety for an undertaking as the arrangements must reflect specifics.

Both are excellent references

not talking about replacing any arrangements in place just trying to avoid any confusuion from using both documents and in doing so selecting the most suitable one for purpose.

Allen,

I would agree with Jay that the CIP Manuals are more detailed than GE700.

My view is that GE 700 is more suited for the site manager whereas the CIP Manual more suited to a middle/senior manager. (As a more detailed reference book)

From a purely economic point of view if your managers have done the SMSTS course they should already have a copy of GE 700 (assuming they have kept it updated)

I have got the new CDM07 GE700 folders and to be honest, I think they very well written and informative and look at lot better than the older manuals.

Buy both and ask your managers/workforce what they think.

I have never looked at other book so am in no position to judge it.

i have access to the latest GE700 myself and agree that it is a good publication that is well put together, however i dont have access to CIP blue book so i cant make the comparison myself hence the question. i am pretty sure that Taylor Woodrow used both publications as referance material, anyone from Taylor Woodrow or Taylor Wimpey care to comment

The introduction to GE 700/08 states:-

......."It is designed to help managers,
supervisors and safety representatives comply
with their legal, moral and social responsibilities and assist in the crucial area of accident prevention."

Refer to:-
http://www.cskills.org/p...ns/extracts/ge700081.pdf

In my view, it lacks the details of some special construction topics that the CIP publication has, which a Construction Health and Safety professional may need to refer to. GE 700 has better checklists and templates for the routine site safety requirements

It is best if you can get access a hard, CD Rom or online version of the CIP Blue book.

There is information in the preface to the online version tha can be accessed by all at:-

The preface to the CIP Blue book at:-
http://www.cip-bluebook.com/Default.aspx?tabid=81

The contents will give you some idea at:-
http://www.cip-bluebook.com/Default.aspx?tabid=82

The homepage is at:-
http://www.cip-bluebook.com/

For the record, I have no personal interest in promoting either of the publications, but have used both as references in a previous role as the head of a technical health and safety information helpline!

Allan

I use both of these publications and find them very useful..
The GE700 when I need to eaplain basic info to the guys and therefore make reference to it in order they can also find the info and the CIP Blue Book when i need to get better clarification of a certain process...in which case I may well go to HSE free publication sheets for this. I also use a Croner pubilcation called H&S Construction Management when I ned clarification and better explanations of the CDM Regs

In addition the Blue Book is updated twice yearly where the GE700 is annual or sometimes longer

i will probably go for having the GE 700 on site for all site managers along with the SMSTS course having been done by the managers and give them access to the CIP blue book via the intranet in case further clarification is needed.

i wonder though will they actually use these publications or will they just gather dust in the site office?

hopefully they will be used as intended.
