Can anybody help I am about to get my first appraisal I have the title of Health & Safety Officer at a very large meat processing factory in Yorkshire. I am in my second year in the department and just passed my Gen Cert with a credit! & await the result of my Fire certificate & Risk management course as well. I have worked very hard to achieve these of which I am proud and love what I do very much indeed.
My question is what do you think would be a realistic salary to try for I am also hoping for further CPD in order to progress to my NEBOSH Diploma & and I am 43 years of age? and the site employees around 1600 people
Hope you can give me some help
Regards
Stephen
P.S. Health & Safety is not just for Christmas its for Life!!! & I hope to get out more next year as well!!

Look at others in the company who are operating at an adviser level where the risks are the same or similar and go from there

Marketing and other such jobs are 'kudos' jobs in most companies so their salaries are out of proportion so a fare evaluation may not be able to made re these types of areas - look at somebody advising re environmental, HR, QA and similar areas

Do you have the power/authority to stop a work activity should you feel it needs to be stopped without referring to somebody else? if so add in something for this responsibility

Go for as much as you can and act from there

Stephen,

Do you have sole responsibility for H&S, or do you report into a H&S manager? Do you have people reporting to you in a technical way?
What level of management do you have direct access to?
Do you submit formal reports to the board or senior management?
How does your company regard H&S?
Has your company funded your training in the past and will it continue in the future?

Hi Stephen,

One way to assess this is to check out comparable jobs in SHP; H&S Adviser salaries can run from 18K (much too low) to 60+(very high risk industries and usually associated with project management etc), but a 'typical rate would be somewhere mid to high twenties.

If you are well below what you think you should be getting, you can always use the advertised rates to batter your managers over the head with ;-)

If you want a more accurate check Principal People's Salary Checker says average for a H&S Officer is £26,083, but as other posters here have said the devil is in the detail,
