CDM Designer's Checklist for simple projects

Posted By Nickb Hi there
Before I go ahead and prepare material from scratch, does anyone have available or can advise where to source a simple Designer's checklist that can be used as a prompt and also completed to provide evidence to show that a Designer has complied with their duties under CDM 2007. I am aware that the HSE do not want risk assessments/information covering activities that a competent principal contractor would ordinarily know what to do. This document is required for relatively straight forward low value projects where one main designer is involved. Your assistance would be much appreciated.

There is a consultancy Complete Health and safety (I think thats the name).
They offer Construction H&S advice. If you Google for them. Maybe they can help you.

Posted By Ciaran McAleenan Hello Nick Clearly Tim is having a laugh or making a point. I presume he knows (from looking at your email address)that the company he is referring you to is your company. On to your question; Take a look at http://www.web-safety.com/cdm/If you select 'Design safety' button on left hand side you can access an abridged version of "Design Safety Analysis and Control" paper written and presented by Philip and I. In the paper there is a sample designers checklist that leads through from hazards to solutions to inputs to construction phase plan or safety file. I think it fit you purpose. I would say in deciding whether information goes towards the plan or the file; If it is a safety matter for consideration during construction put it in the plan (pre-construction information) If it is a safety matter for consideration during use, maintenance or future demolition put it in the file. This will satisfy the fundamental that designs should be capable of being build, used, maintained and demolished safely. More about that in our paper. I would also recommend CIRIA Report C604 as a good read/ prompt, particularly Section 2 'Work Sector Guidance'. Don't worry about the first section. It still refers to CDM94 requirements. Best wishes Ciaran
