Hi All,
I am a health and safety manager working in food retail for a national business. I would like to think I am not alone in this world! Please let me know if you are out there, I would like to do some networking. I am very interested in what good ideas are out there particularly roll cage safety!!

Yeh, health and safety in retailing can be very interesting, particualrly diverse in termso of career development. The best way, which i did was to get your CV out there to as many businesses as possible, it does work

Hi Richard,
Used to do the very same thing in retail across the Channel Islands; now deal with confectionery manufacturing, but we still use rolling cages!

Hi
I currently work in retail. We use roll cages in the process of our deliveries across the UK. There are issues generally speaking with roll cages, but given the numbers we use versus the numbers of accidents that we have then I would say that they do not constitute a major hazard if handled correctly. That i suppose is where part of the issue lays though, if they are handled correctly...which of course they are not all the time.

I agree with you fully, the cages are still a major hazard in retail, I do beleive part of the problem is the poor design of these monsters and the lack of robustness they offer when being banged and scraped from one location to another. I have heard of a retailer who bought a mass of cages with load limit devices on them, therefore controls were in place to avoid overloading. Hi Richard, happy to network with you. My colleague and I represent John Lewis and Waitrose, 250 or so locations and 69,000 employees. We use roll cages every second of every day and they hardly gives us any trouble at all.

Hi Richard, don't know where you're based but the R&D sector have a group in the south east which meets every other month. They're always looking at topics and this might be one they'd cover. We've had alot of focus on moving goods recently in the sessions. The contact details are available on the iosh southeast website or via links somewhere around here.
