It is very hard getting a job as a health and safety graduate without any experience. I need advice on how to get into the job sector where I will be able to start my health and safety career.

Hi, depending on where you are located, the local University Careers Service might be able to help. In Cardiff, there is a long established programme now called Go Wales (formerly Cymru Prosper Wales) linked to the Careers Service. Google Cardiff University Careers and look for Go Wales link on the webpage. Good luck, David

Maybe i was extremely lucky? But after completing my NEBOSH General Certificate with a credit i sent out my CV to a few professionals i knew within the industry that resulted in 2 job interviews.

The first interview took place 2 weeks after i completed the course and i was offered the job the following week with an immediate start as a trainee QHSSE Advisor.

I was employed in a safety job before my NEBOSH Certificate was even issued. Which really gave me the impression that it was easy to get employed in H&S. . . . . . . Have you been searching for trainee positions?

Well I have been searching for trainee jobs but the problem is that I do get phone calls fromm health and safety agencies but it doesnt go beyond that. At least I have a good academic backgrpund with a merit in my Masters programme in health safety and environmental management.

I see the problem, you do not have the practical experiance to start as a health and safety manager as although you have the knowledge you dont have the experiance, but you are overqualified to start as a trainee.

Perhaps contacting employers directly and explaining your circumstances, that you are willing to do whatever it takes to get started, and pay is not a problem, will be the best way to approach this.

I think many employers may be scared off by the fact you have a merit on a masters degree because they will assume you are looking for a high starting salary.

Dont rely on agencies to get you started,

Anyway where are you located? I work for a large company, i could possibly submit your CV if we have any sites in your area.

I'd always advocate sending out spec. letters to prospective employers.

I did it when I moved to Oz & I did it again when I moved to Bristol and on both occasions all I did was look up the Yellow Pages and send out a well crafted letter & CV.

You create your own luck and will have to be very pro-active. Job agencies are one element but you will need to "put yourself out there" as well.

Oz,
Please let me know if you're interested in working within the NHS. There may be an opening here.
