Posted By edd Hi,
I am about to start a online course by course provider SHEilds ltd, from Hull, does anyone know of them? Are they good because I am about to enrol on a National General Certificate course soon.
Also, is it possible for a newbie like myself to get a job shadow for a day or a few weeks with a qualified health and safety advisor, is this possible?
The reason is, I am a little unsure about the job, and wanted to learn more as I get skilled up?
Any thoughts would be welcomed, thanks.

You don't say where you are based, but I would be honoured to have you around in the dark depths of Somerset. I work with an Internationally based company as the HSEQ Director and would be able to give you theory to hands on and it would be a privilege to show you the real world of Health & Safety.
If not then I wish you well in the future, I can't comment on Shields as I have no direct knowledge, only hearsay.

Posted By teaboy hi
i did the level 4 with sheilds, by e learning (email mostly). i had a good experience, good support, emails answered really quickly, good advice and honest assessment. i had a good rapport with my portfolio manager and she helped me loads. i would (and have) recommend them based on my experience
hope that helps

Posted By TBC I worked with a girl who did her courses with them and she was very pleased with her course tutor and her final results.

Posted By J Knight I have no direct personal experience of SHEILDS, except talking to their sales people, but I have put four of my colleagues through the NEBOSH fire certificate with them, and I have the following comments:
The material provided was thorough, up to date and accurate
The levels of personal support seemed fine
The course structure was well described
I would use them in future for people in my company
Two people passed in full and did very well, one passed part 1, and one failed altogether.
The last bit brings me to the most important point; my experience with SHEILDS means that I can happily recommend them (other training providers exist) but how well you do will depend in part on how well suited to distance learning you are; it doesn't suit everybody, as my colleagues' results show,
John

Posted By srd I passed my NEBOSH Fire and Risk Assessment conversion course with SHEILDS by distance learning.
The study material was available online but could not be printed out. It was of an acceptable quality.
I attended the study day, but it was combined with the NEBOSH General certificate, and was more biased towards that.
I passed first time.
Stephen.

Posted By Jonathan Breeze Edd, Where abouts in North Wales are you and have you been in touch with the North Wales branch yet? They may be able to help you with contacts in local business for some kind of placement. More details from this link: http://www.iosh.co.uk/in...o=branches.details&id=29
