Hi Folks,

We are currently looking to justify some (expensive) choices we have made in developing a new care centre. One of our Directors has asked what the evidence is that cramped conditions cause back injuries.

I have offered the Guidance to MHOR as this is what you might call forensic evidence in that it would be admitted as evidence in court and would be persuasive if quoted against us in respect of a quote.

I've also found a HSE research paper from the mattress manufacturing industry which quotes work establishing a direct link between MSD and cramped working conditions.

finally, one of my colleagues has carried out a REBA and established that there is more risk of injury by the REBA criteria in smaller rooms.

But I would be pleased if anybody could offer further evidence in support of a link between back injury and cramped working conditions, especially in the Care industry. Its not anecdotes, we have plenty of these, but if you like scientific evidence I'm after,

John

You might find some more hard evidence in other HSE Research reports - look on http://www.hse.gov.uk/research/whatsnew.htm

A quick search of the Internet found the following articles:

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders affecting members of the
Chartered Society of Physiotherapy
http://www.csp.org.uk/up...cle%20Physiotherapy1.pdf

from the USA
Musculoskeletal Disorders and the Workplace: Low Back and Upper Extremities
http://www8.nationalacad...item.aspx?RecordID=10032 (abstract).
Full text available at : http://www.nap.edu/catalog.php?record_id=10032#toc

hope this helps

Hi Della,

I tried the HSE website, and found a couple of things but only of limited use. However, your CSP link was spot on, thanks very much for that,

John
