Posted By Carl Starling I have only recently got involved in Health and Safety and would like a little help on the following matter.
I am a member of a Sports Club which employs 2 bar staff part time (7-11 6 days a week) as contractors. The fire alarm used to be connected up with the main one with the factory next door, but the factory has now closed and we have no main fire alarm.
Does a full fire assessment need to be done for this Sports Club (which is about 1/4 the size of a footbal pitch), and does there need to be a main fire alarm or would 5/6 smoke detectors, clear signage be sufficient.
All comments gratefully received....
Thanks.

I believe that a fire risk assessment is needed as this is a place of assembly/employment.
Theoretically there does not need to be a fire alarm as long as you can get people out safely and the fire is detected. However, there may be an opportunity for a fire to go undetected in a remote area such as stores/power/boiler room etc.
This is why a fire risk assessment is required, as it will tell you what controls are needed. However the assessment would need to be proportionate to the risk in terms of time and reporting.
Hope this helps.

An assessment is required for this premises, as it is a meeting place, this is clearly stated in the FSO. You may have a considerable life risk depending upon the number of people using the venue at any one time. An alarm system is required but this can be done by a way of shouting if it is deemed suitable by your assessment, i suspect this method would not be suitable in a noisy social club. But people do forget another very cheap alarm system and that is the good old hand operated fire bell, it is easy to install and maintain, but you need to ensure that a nominated person is responsible to operate it when the alarm is raised. Hope this helps.
