To meet at least quarterly. Maintain the Company’s legal compliance. Manage the effectiveness and continuously improve the safety policy and safety procedures. To carry out audits and investigations and monitor safety performance Receive feedback from project safety audits, employee safety concerns and interested parties. Identify areas of unsafe trends and to be proactive in planning and implementing reviewed procedures. To identify, arrange and where practicable, deliver safety training To disseminate safety information and minutes of the resource group meetings to all employees. To review safety statistics and report the findings to the Senior Director for annual review.

Posted By M Forbes The Joint Health & Safety Committee is established to secure and maintain the co-operation of all personnel in framing the companys safety policies and to ensure regular consultation between the company and the representatives of employees on all health and safety at work.
The composition and functions of the Joint Committee shall incorporate the general principles of the Health and Safety at Works Act 1974 and the requirements and advice of the Safety Representatives and Safety Committee Regulations 1976 and the accompanying Code of Practice and Guidance Notes.
The objective of the Committee is to keep under review, and advise upon, the measures taken by the company to secure the health, safety and occupational health of all employees and visitors.
Something along that lines should be ample.

The principal objective of the committee should be the promotion of co-operation between employer and employees in instigating, developing and carrying out measures to ensure the health and safety at work of all employees. The functions of the committee can include MONITOR --new or amended Health and Safety legislation and consider implications for the company. --the adequacy and effectiveness of the safety content of employee training and assist with identifying training needs. --the adequacy of safety and health communication and publicity in the workplace. --reports and other items raised by safety representatives. --the development of safety rules and safe systems of work. CONSIDER --the application of codes, guidance, safety rules and safe systems of work. --matters relating to occupational health and mployee welfare. --relevant reports and factual information provided by the H.S.E. --safety audit reports. EVALUATE --the safety policy, organisation and arrangements and make recommendations for its revision. --accident and notifiable disease statistics and trends to identify recommendations or corrective actions.

Posted By Chris Jerman Guys, I'm not going to disagree with any of those pointers, but I am surprised that no-one mentioned risk assessments.
The idea of being risk driven now is that instead of just 'doing health and safety' which is largely where the list of pointers takes you, we should be using risk assessments to light the way. In other words, what safety stuff does your organisation need to be doing via this committee? I don't know, what's in your assessments?
So, yes, absolutely, to all of those objectives in some form or another, but please consider the implications of risk assessment first, or otherwise what was the point of doing them?
Unfortunately, many SC's have become talking shops where people save up items like broken light bulbs and scratchy toilet paper to bring up at the meetings. Instead they should be sorting those through the proper management channel / mechanism
