Has a competent architect or similar not been involved with the refurb project? If so I would have thought they would have ensured all access matters were as per current building regs requirements etc.in their design /specification.

Gary, door widths for fire safety are given in approved document B of the building regs. The width depends upon numbers of people using them, disabilities etc. The minimum door width for a final exit door is 750mm. corridors and associated doors 1000mm, stairs 1000mm. Some of these are my recommendations to make the corridors and stairs usable!

Need help, e-mail me.

As a starting point the guidance published by HM Gov following the implentation of the RRFSO states that the widths of escape routes which often include doors shoulkd be approriate to the number of people who may need to use them. Basically the recommended widths are a width of 750mm can accomobate 80 people in high risk premises, with 100 in medium risk and 120 in low risk premises. Where there is a width of 1050mm this can be doubled to 160, 100 and 240 but can be widened by 75 mm per 15 additional people. It goes on to say 'The minimum width of an escape route should ideally be 1050mm but in any case not less the 750mm (unless it is used by less than 5 people in part of your premises) and where wheelchair users are likely to use it, not less than 900mm wide.

Suggest you look at the guidance for the RRFSO and the current building regulations to find out more.
