Hi All

I am looking for some ideas for an induction video for contractors and visitors such as customers and sales guys etc.

We have an engineering plant with heavy machinery as in presses and large scale milling machines

I know the basics as in ppe not using the machinery and the legislation duties and hot works forms

has anyone any other ideas I am aiming for maybe a 7-8 minute video

I would appreciate any input

welfare (locations of WC/canteen facilities, etc.)
wearing of ID badges, PPE, etc.
smoking locations (or not)
first aid - methods of calling for help, internal phone numbers etc.
evacuation and alarms (include example sounds if your video will use audio)
prohibited substances, use of cellphones etc.
use of contractor-owned equipment, PAT testing etc.
site traffic rules and parking
confidentiality of information seen during visit, etc

The more visual the better - 3D maps and walkthroughs are far more memorable than powerpoint slides with bullet points, plus they're easier to watch on a smaller screen or with distractions. Remember everyone watching the video will be used to modern movie effects and production standards, so "cheap and cheerful" will stand out a mile. Hiring a C-rate celebrity just makes people laugh at you.

This is a lot more difficult to do than it looks! You want a professional looking spiel with impact, so here are a few tips (I was involved on the fringe of this in a previous life).

Have a script and story board. Plan every second of the video. Remember the KISS principle - Keep It Simple, Stupid. This video may be watched by every imaginable worker, also people with language issues?

Avoid references which will obviously date it eg "Work At Height regs 2005" - miss out the "2005".

Get a photogenic presenter. It does not matter if they are not a safety or engineering person. They must look "right". It is no use using pressed people either - it will look wrong.

Try not to shoot it all in one go, or even 1 day!

Use some stills - sometimes has a greater effect than video.

Get someone to do the sound track (narrative works best - the presenter doesn't have to speak all or any of the words) separately - again, does not have to be the presenter from above.

Best of all, get it all done professionally!
