Hi All
I have spoken with a member of staff within my company who has appeared to have dermatitis from his Blackberry. Has anyone else heard of this before? If so how did you solve the problem?
Many thanks
Vicky

I understand some of the cases do contain nickel and this is a sensitiser to some people. It used to be a problem before the days of tights for some women but I say no more!!:-) Try the black plastic case version if it is the metal version being used.
Otherwise no ideas at all.

It is possible to get dermatitis from almost anything. I am not aware of this having happened with a Blackberry but it would not surprise me at all.
Investigation of a possibly occupational skin problem is not something that I could cover in adequate depth on ths forum. If you would like to discuss this give me a call on 01386 832 311

Rather than having to buy a new Blackberry, if it does have a metal case you can test to see if this is releasing sufficient nickel to cause an allergic reaction. This is known as the dimethylglyoxime or nickel spot test and is available commercially for a relatively small sum. Just Google chemotechnique and the appropriate website should come up.
I use this test regularly in skin exposure risk assessment work to establish whether workers are being exposed to nickel. Just try it on a one pound coin to see how much nickel this releases!
