The answer depends a great deal on the identity of the gas.
Is it methane? or something else?

LPG tanks next to homes are a common feature in remote areas of the UK that do not have a 'mains' gas supply. Therefore, it seems you only need to ensure no-one can drive at the tank or its pipework and damage it.
I saw a tree fall on one such installation while on holiday in Scotland. The regulator was torn from the tank and this vented the whole contents of the tank. Luckily this was during a gale and the contents blew away from the cottage we were staying in!

I would recommend 2m. If you undertake a DSEAR risk assessment, there is a possible risk of an explosive atmosphere developing within 1m of the tank. Very remote I know, but depending what the tank is for, e.g. refilling FLT cylinders, then the chances of an explosive atmosphere increases.
