Do fifre extinguishers have to be checked and serviced by competent persons every 12 monnths. I notice there is a date stamped in the steel. But if it is kept in storeage for more than 12 months does it still need to be checked. I say yes managers say no. I believe i am right. But where does it say this. Where can i view a copy of BS EN3-7 or similar document. Also must the extinguisher have a sticker placed upon it for servicing purposes or is this something that is done later as the extinguisher ages and gets serviced

Toecap,
Cannot recall legislation, no good with road numbers I'd never make a lorry driver! but this,
"Maintenance
Extinguishers to be serviced to the latest standard. The manufacturers instructions will tell you what you need to do to keep your extinguisher in good working order. After an extinguisher has been used, even if only partially, it must be recharged according to the manufacturers instructions.
The extinguisher should be properly serviced once a year. You should use a company registered by the British Approvals for Fire Equipment (BAFE). BAFE is a Government recognised national organisation. You can get details of approved products and advice from
British Approvals for Fire Equipment,
48a Eden Street,
Kingston upon Thames,
Surrey, KT1 1EE
(Tel: 0181 541 1950)."
From http://www.firesafe.org.uk/html/fsequip/exting.htm

Mitch

Extinguisher has to be serviced every 12 months by a competent person. Also a label has to be placed on extinguisher with the following data; the date it was serviced, who serviced it, weight of extinguisher when full, why type of service it had and date next service is due.

Have a look at BS 5306-3 'Code of practice for the inspection and maintenance of portable fire extinguishers' which lays out maintenance levels etc.
Hope this helps.

Agree with WF; British Standard BS5306 should answer your question;
