Posted By Anthony Slinger Can anybody who carries out HAZOPS tell me if they generally use paper based approach (by which I mean Microsoft word, excel, etc) or specific designed software. I have seen some software on the net that can also calculate SIL as per IEC61511.
This is an area in which I would like to develop my competence, working on simple dosing systems. I understand the basic HAZOP principals, just wondered what the general consensus was on recording.
Thanks
Anthony

Posted By Phillip Does the lack of response mean none of the members are involved with HAZOPs???
Specific designed software products are far better than paperwork systems. Used with a beamer the team can see and agree the notes as the HAZOP progresses. By the end of the study the software can virtually produce the report, individual action sheets etc.. Beats looking at your paper notes a few days later and from then produce the paperwork!

Posted By 9-Ship I am involved in HAZOPs quite a bit, which I use software for - generally because out clients want us to, other than the chore of writing up HAZOP, I find both manual and software recorded HAZOPs to be pretty equal.
Any HAZOP is only as good as the HAZOP team.
As for SIL assessments, again is using the PFD limits as laid out in 61508, there is no problem using software. Although I calculate manually as the software I uses won't calculate the SIL rating.
Also remember, you have to calibrate your risk matrix to meet your clients risk requirements as well as the ALARP criteria/triangle set by HSE.

Posted By Andy Petrie It depends on the size of the project and the HAZOP. If you're doing a 12 weeker on an oil refinary then definatly go for the software package, if it's just a few hours or days then use word.
I would seriously doubt that a HAZOP package could give you a reliale SIL level, I personally wouldn't accept that without further study.

Posted By PL We perform about 2 dozen HAZOPs a year and use paper based system.
I too would worry about a linked HAZOP/SIL software without verification.

Posted By Anthony Slinger Thanks for the replies.
9-ship, I would be interested in finding out more information on the software that you use.
I have looked for some software and have seen some where you enter the corporate risk data, etc and arrive at a SIL.
If you could email me at aslinger"at"beesafeconsultants.co.uk I will let you know.
Thanks
Anthony
