We have to do some work in a service riser on the first floor of a building.
The riser has a guard rail, but I do not feel that it is suitable and sufficient.
Does anyone have any details on temporary rails that can be installed while this work is completed.

Posted By Dave Merchant In theory if you're working next to an open doorway then all you need is a frame that's wider than the opening, and supported against the wall by an L-shape etc. Minimum would be a pole at 950mm above the floor level, another at 470mm, and one at floor level. There are purpose-made free standing edge barriers used for rooftops (see www.safesite.co.uk under 'system 2000' for examples) but for such a temporary job I'd probably fab something out of scaffold instead. As long as it's the correct dimensions and 'suitable' in strength it's perfectly legal to do so.

What is the current height and the gap to the intermediate rail? Minimum heights are all fine and dandy but they are minimum and if you happen to be 7' tall, then they simply won't be high enough. Current BR's is 1100m and HSE is 950 with the intermediate being no greater than 470mm. I took the decision long ago to no ttake a bit of notice and exceed all of these, for that reason no barrier is lower than 1200mm and no gap is greater than 300mm with baseboard height at 200mm.
If you can say what is there and what it is, (probably key clamp style) and why you feel is is not s&s, a suggestion can be then made to you.
