Hi, i was hoping someone could point me in the right direction with this. Out occ health nurse wants to put over the counter antiseptic creams into the first aid cabinets for the first aiders to use when providing treatment.

Now Im sure I recall from somewhere that no medicines of any kind should be administered by first aiders or kept in first aid boxes. Am I correct on this or have I got my wires crossed?

Hi, thanks for the responses. I read that too on the HSE website and it seems to me to contradict itself. Whilst it states that medicines should not be kept in the first aid box, there is not problem in making them available to employees?

Whilst I realise that this generally refers to paracetamols it isnt too much of a stretch to apply this to general medication. So is the issue the actual dispensing of the medication?

I.e its ok to make the medicine available to staff and they take it themselves as opposed to a first aider dispensing the medication.

I suggest a quick telephone call to either the St Johns Ambulance or the Red Cross for advice. They booth run the First Aid at Work courses, and it was they who stated on my course no lotions or potions.

Find them at:

Hope this helps.
