Posted By skooter1 Morning all, The current company I work for have Alfred McAlpine as external Safety consultants. The come to our sites every 14 - 15 days and conduct their own inspections and report back to the MD. Their contract is due to expire soon, but their rates have increased by 30% over the last couple of years. Does anyone know of any other companies who offer a similar service? Regards Skooter.

Posted By Robert K Lewis Skooter This sort of request is a trifle difficult to respond to over an open forum without self advertising. There are many good consultancies around and it depends on the type of services you require. Email me if you want a more detailed discussion. Bob

Posted By Robert K Lewis If they are a charity they cannot make a profit on their work unless they are run as an independent inspection service outside of the charity. This starts to come close to unfair trading as they may be taking advantage of tax breaks unavailable to normal businesses. Bob

Posted By SJA These so called Charities exist and have existed for many years all over the country, they operate on the basis of being non-profit making, but that does not mean that they cannot pay their directors and staff as much as they want, or plough their profits back into the company and the development of its services. Worse still they advertise themselves as Charities but they provide consultancy and training services just like any other business. I cannot understand how these organisations can be classed as Charities, they are not providing a service to the public at large. Also they always emphasise the fact they are a charity when 'selling' their services, as I guess this make people more inclined to use them than a traditional consultancy which as Bob states gives them a unfair advantage. The tax side is another issue as well. I personally think it is about time the Charities Commission looked into these organisations and reviewed their charitable status. The likes of IOSH, POSPA and the BSC are there to promote the general safety awareness etc to the public, these other organisations are really just another private consultancy using charitable status and tax benefits to improve their operations.

Posted By Robert K Lewis It is an interesting but successful business model where turnover has increased from around £0.3m to £0.5m+ in around 3 years. Bob
